I left Colorado’s light several days ago to work in hazy Los Angeles. The drive out is always a reminder of what I am leaving, as the intimidatingly immense 14ers (like Gray’s Peak) loom over I-70 — almost doughty me to leave — slowly disintegrate into staggered planes and red rock plateaus, in turn losing their scorched colors and fading into a clay-type desert. It is here I feel really alone.

In the motel during my night-over in Utah, I watched Alone in the Wilderness. I had missed the first few minutes, but wasn’t paying attention grand. What caught my ogle just off the bat was the color. Films don’t glimpse like this today, they are all cartoony, over-saturated digital oilslicks. Wilderness was grainy, worn, low-contrast, and quite worthy to glance, until I realized what was going on, really noticed what the film was about.

Here was a man, who left his job to live secluded from the (technological) world. He built a cabin without disturbing the trees directly around his location. He eventually added a elegant chimney, made of stones detached throughout various hikes at varying altitudes. He built snowshoes and a dog-sled (despite the lack of dogs), and a backpack that could carry anything (slab of wood for a table top, or nearly an entire caribou) . At one point, he needs a wooden spoon, so — where today we would hop in the car, drive through traffic to a store and bewitch one — he carves a amazing spoon out of wood, polished and perfected and filmed in less than an hour.

I couldn’t back but wonder if this film was a godsend; am I doing the fair thing animated away from the mountains, where I am constantly outdoors in the sunshine? In California, I use my days indoors, looking out into traffic, and usually I’m too busy to care. In the evenings, I have headaches, and easily become grumpy.

What is it we want in life? Alone in the Wilderness does not preach “leave the complex, live for simplicity.” The film doesn’t preach at all, in fact. The viewer simply watches this man’s life, which is a far sob from “simple,” by the way; it is constant work to end warm and well-fed. The dangers of the surrounding wildlife isn’t far from Mr. Proenneke’s walls of comfort. In one hilarious moment, though, Mr. Proenneke turns the camera onto a wolverine that had been avoiding him, only to take it rolling (literally sprawled out, rolling!) down a broad snowy hillside, enjoying the powdery snow and the gleaming sunshine.

At my young age, I must do what I feel is factual for me. But that doesn’t mean I can’t attach this disc in the player and vicariously live through a man far more dauntless and ecstatic than I could ever be.

I bought the DVD because when I saw this on PBS I was simply mesmerized by it’s simple and serene beauty. Right, the skills Dick had and the blueprint he built tools and his cabin was very frigid, but I understanding the greatest fraction of the film was his care for for nature. Even though he had to shoot and eat a Ram, he aloof felt abominable for the passe guy. The petite clip of the wolverine rolling down the snowy hill was unreal. I fancy wolverines!!! The only allotment I did not like was the ending narration by the woman, who said something to the carry out that his spirit will live on in the perfect notches of his logs. Dismal! It lives on in that graceful Alaskan boreal wilderness called Twin Lakes…the moss, the shipshape trees, the blueberry bushes, all the mountains and lakes, and the animals.

This is the fifth Godzilla film and its one of the best. Its really a follow up to MOTHRA VS. GODZILLA. This is the first release, in the US, of the unedited Japanese version. For competists, the strangely reedited US version has also been included. Both versions are entertaining.

This is the first time team up of Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra against the alien dragon King Ghidorah (aka Ghidrah). Along for the ride are the twin faeries from

Mothra’s island who, telepathically orchestrate the colaboration. There is also a amnesiac Himalayan princess who is also a cross dressing Martian prophetess; three Blues Brothers look-alike assasins who are out to

finish her off and a tough police detective who wants to save her and his sister who wants to restore her memory. Basically, it tries to play like a Hitchcock thriller or an early Bond film. In the end the espianage plot

and the monster plot come together. This is the first time that Godzilla swithches from menace to hero.

While just having this Godzilla film finally on region 1 DVD, is cause for celebration, there is much more to this release than just the movie itself. With the addition of a great bundle of extra features adding to the fun, and a nicely designed package this becomes a very worthy purchase. But while the film quality is mostly above average or acceptable, it is unfortunately (though not unexpected) a bit below average at times. Just don’t expect crystal clarity all the way through the entire film.

Good points:

1) The movie itself is one of the best of the Godzilla films. This is from the originators of the franchise and this being the fifth in the series, Toho studios and this production crew are at the height of their game here. Ghidorah’s introduction as mentioned in other reviews, is very memorable. The human characterizations are fully realized and completely believable. Very interesting and compelling interaction between all the main characters. This is actually one of the better plotlines in a Godzilla film and if you subtract the Godzilla part of the movie, it’s still a fairly compelling plot. Princess escapes death by unseen alien assistance, she becomes a spokesperson for the aliens and pleads with the earthlings to be forewarned of the emminent disasters that await. Foreign assasins attempt to find her and kill her. Police are involved in her protection as well in finding out why she now has the personality of an alien. The structure of the story is very well formed and does not have the hokey kind of plots that are reminescent of the low budget 1960’s era sci-fi genre.

2) The package has a very unique look and design to it. The Obi band is a nice touch. And it appears much like the “Mothra vs Godzilla” package or the “Godzilla Raids Again” package. Very distinct, utilizing poster art from the era in which it was originally released, encapsulated in what appears like a film canister “look” to it, as a fold open style book. The center spine creaks a bit too much when it opens though. But perhaps it’s appropriate as it further reflects the age of the original film.

3) The extras are well done. Poster gallery, commentary by godzilla “expert” and trailers and a fine documentary on Eiji Tsuburaya. The poster gallery includes brief explanations regarding each poster, which is a helpful addition.

4) Sound quality is very good. The introductory score grabs your attention and sustains throughout the movie. Dialogue mix has been improved over previous releases and there is a very noticable difference between the 50’s era toho pictures and this time period of mid to late sixties. All the groundbreaking sound effects are here in bright and full mono, with both the Japanese and U.S. dialogue tracks fully represented. Some will be disappointed by a lack of sound options, but the sound is as it was originally released in 1964 with a mono soundtrack.

5) The anamorphic widescreen picture and image for the Japanese edited version while not pristine, and considering it’s 40+ year old age, is not bad. Spots and scratches appear from time to time, though not glaringly so. It’s hard to believe that this movie could look perfect after all these years, and it certainly does not. But here in all it’s full color glory is about as good as it can look, which isn’t bad at all and actually quite clear for most of the movie. Contrast is sharp, color is balanced well, images are crisp. And while there is some expected minor fading and it is at times too dark or too light, it does not detract from the overall presentation and most viewers will be satisfied with the film quality. Of course it will not compare favorably to a film released recently, but with the age that this film is and the fact it is of the low budget variety, it is comparable to other DVD releases from movies of this time period.

Bad points:

1) The American edit otherwise known as “Ghidrah, the Three Headed Monster” suffers from a worse looking image quality than the Japanese edit version. Right from the opening titles, the picture is blurry, colors are washed out, scratches and spots exist throughout. Contrast is poor and unbalanced, and though the majority of it looks about average or above, at times it looks like a VHS quality image. Most of the other Godzilla releases are superior in image quality compared to this U.S. edited version. The American Ghidrah definitely shows it’s age. In addition several edits and changes from the original Japanese edit, detract needlessly. For example, editing out nearly the entire Mothra song that the peanut twins sing in calling for Mothra’s assistance. There was no valid reason for cutting the song out. The images remain but different music has been inserted at that point. Sometimes the U.S. edit works better with dramatic music at certain points. In this particular instance it was ill advised.

2) The commentary, while much appreciated for all the vast amounts of information and anecdotal memories, becomes extremely tedious after a while. David Kalat proves from the outset that his knowledge of the subject matter is robust and authoritative as he covers a lot of ground in small bursts. But with one person talking almost non stop, it becomes tiresome to listen to. Perhaps another commentator teamed with him might have broken the monotony a bit, and could have offered another viewpoint to certain details. Also, while Kalat touches upon the differences in the U.S. and Japanese releases in a very detailed manner, it would have helped to have screen shots accompany his descriptions. Sometimes his knowledge goes beyond that of most viewers and he seems to assume everyone is able to follow right along. On the other hand, the personal stories of his own children’s interest in Godzilla and it being the main reason he himself has altered his attitude towards dubbing, was a very interesting and illuminating observation. He definitely hit the nail on the head with those comments, which could apply to practically every person watching, be they longtime fans or casual viewers. Also, his information regarding the toho studios production schedules and how they were producing quite a few films in short periods of time, with some productions overlapping others, whilst using the same production teams, was quite interesting. It illustrates for me, the achievements made in special effects, miniatures, and production values that many of these toho movies are unfairly denigrated for.

So all in all a very good release, and while not perfect is still a very fine, complete movie package. Classic Media have proven with previous releases that they are capable of producing great products, and they continue that trend here with this release of one of the older, more rare Godzilla films and one that has not truly had a legitimate U.S. release…until now. I rate it 4 stars and a recommended purchase, with great extra features and a generously informative, though sometimes monotonous commentary track.

Not only has this well-made, nearly forgotten Film Noir been rescued from oblivion by MPI, but they have used a nearly perfect print. The experience of watching an obscure film like this is greatly enhanced when the picture and sound quality are this good. This DVD deserves a special Film Noir award.

As for WITHOUT WARNING itself, it turns out to be well worth the wait for those Noir fans who have long wished they could see this legendary movie. The direction is tight, the acting mostly very good, and the look of the film is priceless because it captures so many LA locations that are no longer in existence, or that have been drastically altered over 50-plus years. On the visual level alone, WITHOUT WARNING is a must-see. For a movie of this length (77 min) and low budget, we get several nicely executed edge-of-your-seat thrills. However, the intelligent sceenplay provides plenty of dramatic interest as well. This is one of many ‘police procedural’ Noirs, but it’s several cuts above most others: the narration is concise and mostly unobtrusive, and the scenes of 1950s-style police forensics are all interesting and even feature a degree of humor from a witty lab technician. Best of all is the intrigue. An early example of a serial killer Noir, WITHOUT WARNING compares favorably with THE SNIPER (from the same period)–in its close observation of a killer at work, interspersed with police attempts to track him down–but it’s much less sympathetic to the perpetrator in this case. A movie of this type needs a lead actor who can gain audience interest and hold it. This is the case with THE SNIPER, and it’s also true in WITHOUT WARNING. Let’s hope Adam Williams is around to see the beautiful DVD issue of his great lead performance as Carl Martin. This is a fully realized characterization: tormented, enraged, clever, and pathetic. Williams makes it all believable, and he is ultimately responsible for making the film work so well.

As a supplement, the DVD has a gallery of posters and lobby cards

This is not bad for a 1952 noir, but is not as substantial as other films of the same year–I’m particularly thinking of Narrow Margin with the great Marie Windsor, and especially of the similarly-themed film The Sniper, also about a serial killer.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Without Warning! Click Here

A big part of the reason for the three stars rather than four or five is the acting and the script, both of which are, for the most part, straightforward and pedestrian with a few flashes here and there of smarts. But you do have the by then standard “stentorian voice” of a voiceover narrator intoning the details of how the cops follow up leads to catch the killers. You do have the lab guys, complete with glasses and their, you know, “quirky ways” that include drinking tea out of a beaker and subtly showing up the “dumb street cops” how smart they (the lab guys) are and how unsmart the cops are. And of course you do have the innocent female victim, in the form of the daughter of a semi-crusty older guy who loves his daughter, blah, blah.

On the other hand, you also have something that could make your eyes widen and your jaw drop, if just a little bit, and that is a bad girl who, in so many words, practically begs the killer to let her have it–not meaning murder, but sex. The scene in which the two of them are in her car next to each other is fraught with sexual tension and is way ahead of its time. Not only that, but the obvious equating of sex with death is so ripe in that scene that it says more than anything else in the film does about the killer and why he does what he does. This was a really great scene.

Ed Binns is on hand to give the film somewhat more polish; he plays one of the two cops after the killer, Carl Martin, who works as a gardener. Carl’s thing is to bump off blondes who are young and good looking. And somehow either he finds the married one, or they find him. The fact that it’s never made clear just how he winds up with married blondes points to the psychological undertones used in the story, and that’s not at all a bad thing.

There are some scenes–or at least lines–here and there, that actually appear to look forward to more contemporary films and they are slightly startling in their modernity. So this is an unusual mixture of the pedestrian and the intelligent. It’s definitely of its period and is not at all bad. It’s an interesting noir that’s at least worth seeing if not owning. If you’re a noir fiend like me, you’ll want it for your collection. In my estimation, it ranks along with B noirs like Blonde Ice and Quicksand as representative of their period but not in what could be called the “seminal noirs” which are films like Out of the Past, Murder My Sweet, Double Indemnity, and Black Angel.

Still, it’s a solid decent effort.

This 1954 film was written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz who sure does know how to make movies. In one of the very first scenes, Ava Gardner is dancing in a nightclub in Spain. We know she’s great even though the camera isn’t on her for one minute. All we do is hear the music and watch the faces of the people watching her. By the time we do see her, she’s already in her dressing room. She’s absolutely gorgeous and lights up every scene she’s in. We see her character’s rise to movie stardom and share the unfulfilled life she leads. And then, just when we think she’s finally found happiness, tragedy strikes. It’s a modern day classic drama with a story that pulled me right in.

Humphrey Bogart plays a movie director who befriends this “barefoot Contessa”, nicknamed that because she was once so poor that she didn’t have shoes. She prefers going barefoot and this theme is emphasized all the time, showing her barefoot whenever possible. Rossano Brazzi, who doesn’t appear till late in the film, is cast as the true romance in her life. All of these actors do a good job, but I was particularly impressed with the performance of Edmund O’Brien, cast as a public relations man for a studio executive. It’s a small part but I just kept thinking how good he was. Later I discovered that he won an Academy Award for this role.

It’s the screenplay that moves the action. It never lagged and I sat there with my eyes glued to the screen wondering what would happen next. Considering that this is basically just a love story, that’s saying a lot. I totally enjoyed the viewing experience. It’s too bad though, that there were no features included on the DVD. It would have been nice to have a little more background. “The Barefoot Contessa” gets a high recommendation from me just because I enjoyed it so much.

Yes, this is a much more mature movie than most are used to these days and the story takes a bit longer to gain momentum.

The characters actually have depth and they can act! How refreshing. While watching I found myself just intrigued with Ava Gardner and think she is perhaps one of the most beautiful women ever to grace the earth. The dialogue is simply deliciously revealing as the characters speak from their hearts.

“There’s more to talking than just words…”

Ava plays the Barefoot Contessa, Maria Vargas who is discovered in Madrid. I expected there to be much more dancing in this movie, being it was about a dancer. However, there is just really one scene of her dancing out in the open with her gypsy friends where she sees the man she falls madly in love with. He is a nobleman and can provide everything for her. She sees him as the man who has seen more in her than any man ever has before.

The scenes where Ava and Bogart converse are the most meaningful. Bogart has a way of bringing out Maria’s natural curiosity. When anyone tells her “no” she says “yes.” She is determined to be owned by no one and yet, everyone seems to want to own her. She fears being exposed and unprotected. Emotionally, she is still a child in many ways and believes in fairy tales. The harsh realities of loving someone and not receiving it in return seem foreign to her.

The first scene is in a graveyard and from here, the scenes flash back to the past in a continuous fashion throughout with narration. Each part of the story is revealed at just the right moment.

The rest of the movie seems to deal more with her career and love interests. The theme of Cinderella and “shoes” plays out well and is very significant in many ways. I thought that even though it wasn’t really mentioned, when Maria says she didn’t forget her shoes in one scene and Bogart picks them up for her, this symbolizes her complete trust in him. Watch for the significance of the shoes in one of the last scenes as well.

The prince in this story loves Cinderella, there is just something he can never give her. While Maria says she needs someone to love her and make her feel safe, she wants the entire “Prince” package. What she finds is someone who doesn’t love her enough at first, to tell her he can’t make her completely happy.

It was in August of 1955 that 15-year-old Emmett Till was sent from Chicago by his mother to spend the summer with his great uncle, Moses Wright, in Money, Mississippi. On August 24, Till and some other black teenagers who had been picking cotton went to Bryant’s Grocery and Meat Market to get some candy. In the store Till allegedly whistled at Carolyn Bryant. When her husband returned from a trip several days later and heard about the incident, Bryant and his half-brother J. W. Milam decided to “teach the boy a lesson.” On August 28, they kidnapped Till from his uncle’s house, too him to a plantation shed, brutalized the boy, shot him, and dumped his body in the Tallahatchie river, having tied a seventy pound fan from a cotton gin around Till’s neck with barbed wire. The two men were tried and found not guilty by an all-white jury. In January 1956 their confession was paid for and published by “Look” magazine. Both men would die from cancer, Milam in 1980 and Bryant in 1990.

I do not remember when I first heard of Emmett Till, but the story of the black teenager who was killed by white men in Mississippi for the crime of whistling at a white woman was a pivotal event in energizing the Civil Rights Movement and I have known about it for a long time. However, I never saw a photograph of Emmett Till’s body until I was at the Seattle Art Museum looking at an exhibit having to deal with depictions of race and gender in art, and there was a small photograph of Till’s body on display at his funeral. The photograph was too small to tell any details, but you were struck by the swollen and misshaped head. It did not look human, but then to Milam and Bryant, Emmett Till was never a human being.

The title of Keith A. Beauchamp’s documentary is “The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till,” not because the story has not been told, but because the people he interviewed, including Till’s mother, Mamie Carthan Mobley, along with several cousins and friends from that summer in Mississippi, never had a chance to tell their story in court. Beauchamp provides them with that opportunity, using newsreel footage from 1955 as well. It follows the chronology of events, from Till’s birth to the present and Beauchamp’s own investigations into the case (his chief claim is that up to 14 other people were involved in the crime in various ways). For just telling the story and covering the facts, Beauchamp keeps things pretty basic in his documentary, letting people speak for themselves.

The most unforgettable part of the documentary is when Mobley tells the story of getting her son’s body back home. Officials in Mississippi wanted to bury the body before anybody got a good look at it and when Mobley managed to get it back to Chicago the coffin was nailed shut. But she got it opened and then describes what it was she saw in simple and graphic details, emphasizing not the horrors but the child she remembered (e.g., she smiles as she talks about how she thought Emmett’s teeth were the most beautiful things she had ever seen and then remembering seeing only two of them and wondering where the rest of them were). It is only after Beauchamp lets her tell of the pivotal point where she decides to leave the casket open at the funeral so the world can see what was done to her son in Mississippi that we go from a school photograph of a smiling Emmett Till to the wrecked ruin of his face and head. This is the most disturbing image from the Civil Rights movement, but that is exactly why it is the most important one and why its publication in “Jet” was an important catalyst. You really cannot tell the story unless you look at the photograph, and teachers who want to show this documentary to their students should be prepared to defend their decision.

In addition to Mobley, it is Moses Wright, who stood up in court and pointed to the two white men who came and took away Till (there is a photograph of the dramatic moment), who stands out here. But it strikes me that somebody who is not mentioned by name, William Bradford Huie, played a key role as well. A journalist and author (”The Americanization of Emily,” “The Klansman”), Huie was often criticized by mainstream journalists for using his checkbook to get stories. But it was Huie who paid the murderers to confess in a national publication five months later. A follow up story revealed that the businesses of Milam and Bryant had gone under because they were ostracized by local whites. I am sure this did not happen because of the murders, which clearly the jury representing the town supported, but because of the published confession that took away the thin veneer provided by the not guilty verdict.

This documentary received a lot of publicity because it fueled an effort to reopen the case. The U.S. Department of Justice did reopen the case to determine whether others in addition to Milam and Bryant were involved. The F.B.I. and Mississippi officials worked on a joint investigation, and while Till’s body was exhumed so an official autopsy could be performed, the federal investigation was closed in March of this year. Consequently, justice in this case will not result in anybody ending up in jail, but rather with preserving the testimony of these witnesses for posterity (Till’s mother died after the documentary was completed). Carolyn Bryant (now Donham after her fourth husband) is still alive and living in Greenville Mississippi. Signs in her front yard warn that uninvited visitors will be prosecuted, an apparent indication that she believes the law in Mississippi continues to protect her a lot more than it ever did Emmett Till.

This Documentary was well done, based on the 1955 brutal lynching of 14 year old Emmett Louis Till, an African American teenager just trying to have a good time with his family and friends. Until he whistled at a white woman, Carolyn, wife of Roy Bryant, Sister-n-Law of J. W. Milam. These 2 men were accused and aquitted of the heinous crimes that took Emmett Till’s young life. This is true crime and is well worth the money, watching this film has made me cry for the family of Emmett, it was devastating to watch how the Mississippi court system back in 1955 let 2 animals go after admitting they kidnapped and murdered someone. How gruesome. Emmett Louis Till deserved what any other person deserved, to live and love, instead his life was cut short. This is very painful to watch. Emmett’s Mother, Mrs. Mobley, was such an inspiration, her words touched me, she was a wonderful woman.

This is a must-see film, it is always a good idea to see history so we do not forget what “civilized” man is capable of. This unfortunate young man’s death sparked the Civil Rights Movement. It hurts me to know what others can do to each other. See this film for yourself. Thank you.

The Shield may be lamentably gone from TV, but prominent alumnus Kurt Sutter seems to have taken it upon himself to carry on its legacy with Sons of Anarchy, and if the show’s first season is any indication he’s more than up to the task. Anyone who enjoyed The Shield’s combination of intelligence and testosterone will certainly find a lot to like here, as SoA quickly established itself as among TV’s most unique and consistently compelling shows and only got better from there. Striking a near-perfect balance between grit and sensationalism, it takes viewers through a world marked by violence, double-dealing, and racial division, with an emphasis on the ambiguous morality and personal and familial baggage that come with a life lived between the straight world and the criminal one. The machinations of the characters and the twists of the plot are almost operatic, but the show remains rooted in the harsh realities of gangland.

The premise is sort of Hamlet-meets-the-Sopranos: youthful biker and new dad Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) finds himself trying to balance work with personal life as the Vice President of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcylcle Club Redwood Original (aka SAMCRO), a gun-running biker gang co-founded by his late father and now run by his stepfather Clay Morrow (the ever-swaggering Ron Perlman), who’s married to Clay’s widowed mother Gemma (Katey Sagal, in pretty much the biggest departure possible from her Married With Children days). From the somewhat hippie-ish beginnings envisioned by Jax’s father, SAMCRO has evolved into a criminal powerhouse, especially in their central California base of Charming, where they’re practically a small-town Mafia. These guys may not be as bad as the Hell’s Angels, but the show makes it clear that they’re far from harmless nonconformists, as we see them running guns, committing murders and (in one particularly stunning scene) burning off the tattoo of a perfidious former member. Single-episode plots focusing on the gang’s efforts to turn a profit and stay out of trouble are expertly mixed with longer arcs dealing with the constant conflicts of gangland life and the mounting tensions within the club. As the season progresses, it increasingly develops into a battle of viewpoints between Clay’s world-weary cynicism and Jax’s (relatively) idealistic leanings and pangs of conscience, which leads inexorably to a conclusion that already has me drooling in anticpation of season two.

In another welcome parallel with The Shield, the show’s writing gets progressively more complex and nuanced as the season goes on, giving the cast, a nice assemblage of recognizable (but not household) names, a lot of room to work. Further cementing his status as Hollywood’s leading Jewish tough-guy actor, Perlman is impossible not to watch as Clay, the club leader who walks a fine line between toughness and ruthlessness. Clay’s a classic antihero in the Tony Soprano-Vic Mackey mold, whose occasional moments of decency don’t quite compensate for his myriad of bad acts, but he’s practically a softie compared to his wife. Taking the concept of standing by her men very seriously, Gemma’s the very picture of steely determination, willing to say and do anything to safeguard her family, and she shares both Clay’s ability to perceive all the angles and his lack of reservations in doing what needs to be done.

For his part, Jax is certainly no saint, but he hasn’t quite been won over to the Machiavellian value system championed by his mother and stepfather. Constantly tugging at his conscience are the newly-discovered writings of his late father John, a somewhat intellectual type who didn’t necessarily intend for the club to become a crime syndicate. The voice-over narration of John’s journal is a bit of a contrived device in a show largely devoid of them, but it does nicely frame the struggles that come to define the season. This season also sees a succession of great supporting turns from recognizable faces–Jay Karnes as a twisted ATF agent with a thing for Jax’s ex, Mitch Pileggi as a vicious Nazi meth lord, Ally Walker as an enjoyably amoral Fed who vows to take the Sons down–that only serve to up the entertainment quotient. Even the law-enforcement officers–the shady, compromised Chief Unser and the more principled, by-the-book Deputy Chief Hale–eventually emerge as multi-dimensional characters in their own right.

Overall, it’s extremely difficult to find fault with this season. SoA seems to have flown under the radar a bit while shows like Mad Men and Breaking Bad get all the acclaim, and while those are both great shows I think SoA easily holds its own as one of the best on TV right now. If it maintains its level of quality in season two, we viewers could have yet another all-time great on our hands.

Fantastic show and GREAT extras on the DVD! Always appreciate it when a DVD set includes extras. Includes deleted scenes, a gag reel, films about the tattoos, the motorcycle customization, casting decisions narrative including the original audition tapes for all the cast. Also includes some audio commentaries.

All in all, a great DVD set and that’s not to mention the show itself. Charlie Hunnam steals every scene he is in. He is electrifying, vibrant and SO talented. You can’t take your eyes off watching him every moment he is on the screen.

The show is fantastically written but even better is watching Hunnam interact, especially with his girlfriend–wow, their scenes are hot! Some actors are just really interesting to watch, they can do more with a look or a word than others do with entire lines. Hunnam is one of these.

His character is the vice-president of the Sons of Anarchy but his intelligence, questioning of the status quo and determination to stick to his beliefs means he is in conflict with those in the club who either have no morals, easily leave them behind or only care about money.

Hunnam is fascinating to watch, in one scene he is emotional or tender to his girlfriend or family, then the next he is violently asserting his will in clashes where he defends his principles or makes a point.

There is an interesting tension showing his desire to be honest in the world, yet his need to be duplicitous, because of gun-running or other illegal activities.

The scene where he finds a gawker sitting on his bike, and is pretending to be friendly then beats the guy to the ground, telling him “Don’t EVER sit on another man’s bike!” is an illustration of this.

There is a stillness to Hunnam’s portrayal which brings so much interest to the character. Instead of going on and on about something, he’ll just say “Are you ready for this?” and with a short sentence and a look, will say everything.

The audio commentaries are really funny too. There’s one scene where they show Hunnam with his shirt off and the show’s creator says “This is one for the ladies!” and he is so right.

All in all, this DVD is well worth buying and keeping, not just a rental.

For anyone looking for one of those edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting-excitement suspense/mystery blockbusters, this won’t be your cup of tea. It is paced slowly, contemplatively, so that the viewer can absorb of the implications of the story as the drama unfolds. It’s a murder mystery, yes, but it goes where few in this genre are willing to go - to search out the very marrow of death and its significance.

Roy Dupuis delivers a characteristically excellent and nuanced performance as a detective, struggling with his own demons whilst attempting to solve a 150-year-old murder. Jane McGregor is adequate in her role as the archaeologist brought on to the case who has a secret of her own.

It’s a thoughtful, careful movie, beautifully filmed. Particularly gratifying is the use of doubling (ok, this isn’t a technical term, but then, I’m not a film scholar, just an enthusiast). Robert Budreau excellently parallels the personal struggles of his protagonists by seamlessly shifting the story lines with visual cues.

The only flaw I found was that the soundtrack was at times overwrought, overpowering the performance of the actors. A good soundtrack should underscore, not overwhelm, the action on screen.

Overall, a very good, intellectually-stimulating film with the perfect amount of dramatic tension to keep story line flowing.

I came across this film by accident and had no reviews or synopsis to tell me what this film whas about. All i knew was that roy Dupuis was the lead actor and since I had enjoyed his work on La Femme Nikita I decided to take a chance.

Unlike Dupuis stoic charactor ” Michael ” on LFN, in this film his role of Dect. Conk Adams willingly expresses his emotions.

Hereis a story of two fragile people drawn together on a murder case that soon becomes something else entirely and they become close. Not really lovers but more than friends and share an emotional bond.

The ending came as a total surprise, so simple it should have been expected but you are so involved in what is happening you don’t even think of what is to come until it happens.

There is no real ” Happy Ever After ” here only a bittersweet release. Dupuis gives an excellent performance and this film is truely deserving of a look.

I bought this DVD from the Reagan Library after watching the coverage of Reagan’s funeral service this past summer. I was fascinated and moved by the protocol of a State Funeral and the love that protruded through the Reagan family and this nation for President Reagan. It is rare in our country that a State Funeral occurs and where the entire nation takes a moment to stop and notice. The DVD provides coverage of all services that occurred - (1) US Capitol Rotunda Service, (2) US Capitol Rotunda Depature, (3) National Cathedral Funeral Service, (4) Reagan Library Family Service, and (5) Reagan Library Final Sunset Service. The services were all presented without commentary and allowed me to experience the procession on my own. As a bonus, there is historical footage and photos of President Reagan. In short, this DVD provides a complete and dignified farewell to one of our nation’s leaders that can be revisited and shared with future generations to come.

An exceptionally well done and moving tribute to the greatest leader of the free world we have yet to encounter. This has it all, the full services in Washington to the sunset services at the Reagan Library in CA. A very impressive display of precision and symbolism by the military that is as inspirational as it is emotional. Video and sound is top notch, taking you up close and showing you things unseen by the various cable coverages. The bonus features and photo galleries stand on their own. Beautiful pieces of music throughout. Dutch would have been proud, I know I am.

Just a quick note about the packaging:

If you aren’t sure whether to go with Comic Book Guy “limited” packaging or standard, (and I’ve notice some retailers, perhaps anticipating the unpopularity of the bulky “limited” packaging, are selling it at a considerable discount over the standard packaging) here’s a little secret:

The “limited edition” packaging is little more than a 3-D molded Comic Book Guy face attached with rubber-cement to the front of the standard edition packaging. That’s right–the standard packaging artwork is right there underneath Comic Book Guy’s fat face! You can EASILY peel the Comic Book Guy face off the front of the box without damaging either, and you now have the standard DVD packaging, which will fit on your DVD shelf, as well as a Comic Book Guy face that you can display or toss in the trash.

By this point the series had settled into a too-comfortable format that this season exemplifies.

1. Hilarious first act that is soon left behind by the actual plot.

2. So-so second act that introduces the gratuitous guest voice and expands on the plot.

3. Hit or miss third act that either veers completely away from the general plot or takes the premise to an absurd level. Depending on the execution and one’s personal tastes, this makes the episode either decent or awful.

Individual episodes deviate from this at times, but for the most part they stick fairly religiously to it. Did I say the guest voices are gratuitous? The stories should not be notable mainly because of the guest voice. This season leads off with The Who episode (which the commentary reveals doesn’t feature the entire group, even as it existed then), a symbol of what’s to come.

That said, I still give this 4 stars because of the mostly great first acts, which this period of the show elevates to an art form. The best ones have almost nothing to do with the direction of the rest of the episode but are loaded with great gags, like the trip to the Festival of Books in “Insane Clown Poppy.”

Some of the third acts are brilliant, too, like The Prisoner homage in “The Computer Wore Menace Shoes,” or the mob family gathering Homer & Krusty invade in “Insane Clown Poppy.”

What’s largely missing is the emotional core that was so memorable in the first several seasons. By this point many of the writers, directors, and producers who created and cared about these characters have all have long since moved on to other things. The commentaries make pretty clear that the 12th season staff just like making Homer appear as dumb and depraved as possible. “Homer vs. Dignity” is a particular low point featuring Homer doing baby talk in a diaper and getting raped by a panda. When genuine emotional substance is called for, such as Krusty trying to establish a relationship with his previously unknown daughter in “Insane Clown Poppy,” no feeling comes through at all. (Compare it to “Like Father, Like Clown,” where Krusty reconciles with his dad, or the end of “Lisa’s Substitute” when Homer gets Lisa to laugh with him again.) In this specific case, part of the problem is Drew Barrymore’s generic voice work completely fails to convey the emotion that’s animated for her. In general, though, it reveals that the producers generally seemed to coast through the year.

Still, there are some highlight episodes, like “Trilogy of Error,” and “HOMR,” and the annual “Treehouse of Horror” is a little better than some previous years’ Halloween eps. Even the lesser episodes have great moments. The animators’ commentaries are interesting as they discuss and illustrate on screen certain aspects of drawing the show. The Comic Book Guy’s highlight reel is fun to watch. There is still plenty to enjoy, even if you maybe won’t enjoy it quite as often as the earlier seasons.

This movie was good, it would have got 5 stars but the ending was trash. The special effects are good and the story was good and the movie was tight up until the end, where it changed to garbage.

This movie wasn’t that good. Snoop’s character was good but most of the movie was actually kind of stupid. There were a lot of scenes that made me say “Oh my God that’s so dumb” but there were also a few scenes that I thought were pretty cool. There was a lot of blood and gore in this movie, that’s really the only thing that kept me interested. This is the kind of movie you watch once, not worth buying. Rent this one.
